Lancaster University, which is considered one of the top universities in the UK, will use the Student Engagement Analytics platform StREAM to offer more proactive support to their students.
Lancaster University was introduced to Solutionpath whilst seeking to respond to post-pandemic changes in teaching delivery, student engagement and increased adoption of blended learning. They recognised early on that in this climate it would become increasingly important to move towards providing more proactive support, particularly for those students who may be struggling.
Their existing internal system used for student engagement took a single view of engagement, that largely focused on attendance, meaning that the information produced did not give a full picture of engagement and that the current system was no longer fit for purpose. However, trying to identify what an engaged or disengaged student might look like and knowing when and how to respond was recognised as a complex issue. After an extensive tender and procurement exercise StREAM and the Solutionpath team were selected to provide a specialist approach to understanding their student’s engagement. Where multiple data sources can be processed using trained algorithms to ensure a full and rounded definition of engagement and success.
“Working with Solutionpath allows us to focus our internal development on core student records activity, whilst leveraging a commercial partner with expertise in data analysis and algorithmic management of engagement to make real and meaningful improvements to the outcome of our students”
Chris Dixon, Head of Digital Change and Innovation, Lancaster University.
A key area of importance for Lancaster University when looking for a student engagement analytics solution was ensuring that data insights would be available to those who need it most. With StREAM, key staff from across the institution such as academic departments, college advisors, personal tutors and the students themselves will all be able to view engagement via simple data visualisation dashboards that are easy to access and interpret. These real-time insights will allow staff to make more meaningful and trackable interventions, that produce measurable improved outcomes for their students.
Lancaster’s intention is that these interventions should not only result in improved student outcomes in terms of performance in assessment but also result in improved retention rates, higher student satisfaction, and better degree outcomes, all of which have a direct and positive impact on the University’s league table performance, student recruitment and financial stability.
Richard Gascoigne, CEO at Solutionpath comments on working in partnership with this world-class university,
‘We are honoured to have been selected to work with Lancaster University to support their student engagement initiatives and provide a valuable tool to ensure their students have the best chance of success. We look forward to our ongoing relationship, reviewing the impact a more holistic view of engagement will have on their institution and welcoming them into our enthusiastic learning analytics community.’
The implementation of StREAM at Lancaster University is underway and we hope to share more on their progress later in the year.
