It’s been a challenging few years for nursing students, teaching hospitals and universities, so there has never been a more significant time to acknowledge the sector for their hard work and dedication to the profession.
Having worked closely with the nursing community this year, helping to support universities to reduce attrition in nursing courses we felt this was a perfect opportunity to sponsor this year’s Student Nursing Times Awards. The biggest UK-wide award for nursing students and higher education institutions, celebrating the brilliant individuals and organisations making a difference in nursing and midwifery.
Since 2011, the Student Times award has brought together the nursing community to celebrate inspiring talent within the profession. Not only does the award celebrate students, but it also celebrates lecturers, practice supervisors, universities, trusts, and private organisations that go above and beyond supporting student nurses during their studies.
The shortlists have now been announced including the category of Best Student Experience, which has been judged by Project Manager Dr Rachel Maxwell. This award recognises universities who are using innovative ways to enhance their students experience or have delivered exceptional experiences to their students.
Best Student Experience shortlist:
It is wonderful to see so many amazing institutions up for this category. The student experience is becoming an even more significant consideration for universities; as the Nursing Times Award notes ‘impacts of the pandemic and the scarcity of funding for post-registration education has raised students’ expectations of their education provider and gives students more choice about where and how they study.’
Other categories include the new Student Nurse of the Year: Clinical Research which is highlighting the growing speciality of clinical research nursing and the vital role nurses play in delivering high-quality clinical research. It is exciting to see the way learning is changing landscape student nurses across the UK and appreciate that the Nursing Times is reflecting this in the awards. Dr Rachel Maxwell has been at the forefront of the student nursing projects here at Solutionpath and heads the Nursing Community of Practice which she has a distinct passion for, bringing together the higher education nursing community to develop how engagement data and intervention can support student nurses. Rachel is extremely excited to be a judge at this year’s awards and comments:
‘This year, I have the honour of judging the Best Student Experience category as part of the 2022 Student Nursing Times Awards.
Having read the nominations, what strikes me is the level of dedication to supporting the student experience from within nursing and midwifery teams within the UK and around the world. There are nominations from individual students who have been positively impacted by the commitment and support provided to them by their teaching and placement teams, through to nominations for initiatives designed to support students at key stages within their academic studies. Finally, there are nominations that cover the student experience over the duration of the entire academic programme.
Across all of them, what stands out is a genuine passion for nursing and midwifery – whether from experienced professionals, or from our future nurses and midwives – and a desire to support those that they care for, working effectively within multi-disciplinary teams and developing key skills and competencies such as leadership, empathy, accountability and compassion.
To all those shortlisted – I wish you well.’
